Communications Assistant Professor Hamilton Bean‘s essay, “The Paradox of Open Source: An Interview with Douglas J. Naquin,” has been published in the International Journal of Intelligence and Counter Intelligence.

Naquin served as the first director of the CIA’s (Central Intelligence Agency) Open Source Center from 2005 to 2012.

Drawing upon organizational communication theory and the exchange with Naquin, Bean’s article pinpoints five dialectical tensions that characterize the development and diffusion of open source intelligence throughout the U.S. intelligence community and explains how these developments relate to the ideals of openness, transparency, and accountability.
