Spicy event is part of Student Life's Spirit Thursdays

DENVER – University of Colorado Denver students Kaysie Walter, April Rempel and Katie Camarata converged on the savory aromas with the same thought: It sure is a good day for chili!
The Office of Student Life hosted a well-timed Chili Cookoff in the North Classroom Atrium during today’s cold and snowy noon hour. The event is part of Student Life’s Spirit Thursdays, which take place each Thursday on the Denver Campus.
“The event went great — we ran out of chili around 12:30,” said Joe Halter, assistant director of Student Life. “The purpose of Spirit Thursdays is to help build a sense of community and give students a place to connect with CU Denver.”
Chancellor Jerry Wartgow took part in the sampling of spicy creations as well.
Besides five different chilis to sample from — cooked by students and staff — students received free CU Denver T-shirts at the table.
A steady stream of students stepped to the table to sample the various chilis. Rempel, a junior, commented that the veggie chili could use more spice. “I think this one shows why there should be meat in everything,” she said.
Students got to vote on their favorite chili. In the end, a chili made by Ronson Fox, president of the Student Government Association, took first prize.
Bundled in a warm winter coat as she attended classes today, Walter, a sophomore said, “It’s a perfect day for a chili cookoff.”
