CU Denver Chancellor Wartgow emphasizes ease of transfer credits
Complete your associate’s degree and be on your way to better jobs and better pay.
That was the message delivered Nov. 14 during a ceremonial banner ‘signing’ by the leaders of the University of Colorado Denver, Community College of Denver and the Colorado Community College System as part of the overall awareness-raising campaign “Commit to College Completion Corps.”
About 40 students also attended the event in the South Classroom atrium on the Auraria Campus.
Chancellor Jerry Wartgow said students can start as juniors at CU Denver if they first complete a two-year associate’s degree at the community college level. Transfer students also can concurrently finish their associate’s degree while earning credits toward a bachelor’s degree at the university.
Also speaking at the event were Nancy McCallin, president of the Colorado Community College System, Cliff Richardson, president of CCD, and Thalia Diaz, president of CCD’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year schools.
Average employment earnings are 35 percent greater for an associate’s degree holder than a high school dipoloma, McCallin said. Over an average lifetime, an associate’s degree holder will earn an average $500,000 more than a non-degree holder, she said.
On the banner, Wartgow wrote “Hope to see you at CU!,” while McCallin and Richardson added similar messages of encouragement. Student attendees were invited to sign their names on the large banner, which was put up in the atrium by members of Phi Theta Kappa.
