Henry Butler performs in Tivoli CommonsToday’s Disability Awareness Fair in the Tivoli Commons was geared toward promoting a greater awareness of the range of disabilities and challenges faced by individuals who have a disability.

The event, hosted by the CU Denver Office of Student Life in partnership with Disability Resources and Services, brought together representatives of more than 30 campus and local resources to help raise awareness about disabilities.

“We want to educate people on the different services that are available to them. This fair is really about resources and giving students access to those resources,” said Sherry Holden, coordinator for Disability Resources and Services.

Along with the information tables, including animal guides and a theater troop, there were several food trucks and live music provided by Henry Butler (pictured above).

Butler is a blind musician from New Orleans, La. who has been performing professionally since the age of 12. He has been regarded as one of the best jazz musicians with twelve albums to his credit.

There were also award recognitions given for the Faculty Universal Design for Learning received by  College of Liberal Arts and Sciencees faculty members Lunden MacDonald, Modern Languages and Elizabeth Kleinfeld, English.

Blair Douglas, a student with a learning disability, was awarded the Zarlengo Foundation Scholarship.

“In our center we focus on accommodating students with disabilities and evening the playing field with other students,” said Holden. “It’s kind of like putting on glasses; we just want things to be equal.”

Holden also said that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of students registering with the disability office recently. “Because of the new disability amendment, students are more aware of their rights.
They are also being told about college resources in high school now so they come in for their freshman year more aware.”
