CU Denver Career Center focuses on dream careers
DENVER – What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a question that is asked of most every young kid and even young adults.
Today’s CU Denver Career Center workshop, Dream Big: What do you want to be when you grow up?, helped students explore career options that would be fulfilling in every way possible.
Jessie Czerwonka, assistant director for the CU Denver Career Center, said, “You really need to think about yourself and what makes you unique.”
During the workshop students, mostly first year but also some second, third and fourth year, contemplated what would make for a perfect work day and the perfect leisure day. Many things were mentioned such as a stress-free environment and being outdoors.
“If you see the overlap of the two scenarios that is going to be where you are the happiest,” Czerwonka pointed out.
The students also were given a four-part quiz to see where their perfect career would land. The idea is that the interactions of personal interests, skills, values and personality is where an individual’s dream career is going to land.
“It should make you happy and you should also have a passion for it,” Czerwonka said. She added, “I have people who come in and tell me they are great at math and are a math major but they have no interest in it. Well, you aren’t going to be happy if you have no interest in what you’re doing.”
“In the Career Center we want to help people understand what is important about choosing a career and major and also help them realize that they aren’t the same thing,” Czerwonka said, “We want to open people’s eyes to all the possibilities their major offers, and we want to help students with undecided majors to realize how many options for majors there are.”
Today’s workshop was the first of two parts. The second part, an ice cream/jenga social, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Tivoli 440. There also is a majors fair on Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the Auraria Events Center for those who are still undecided.
Czerwonka concluded, “Please stop by the Career Center and see what services we have to offer. You don’t need to wait until your senior year. Start now and be more prepared!”
