Despite snow flurries and frigid temperatures, a festive day of football, fireworks and other activities took place on the Auraria Campus on Saturday to commemorate Veterans Day.
The Office of Veteran Student Services at the University of Colorado Denver joined other veteran student groups in hosting the full slate of events.
The theme of this year’s event was “Run, Rejoice, Remember, Celebrate.” The day kicked off with a Veterans Day 5K fun run on the Auraria Campus. Other events included the Auraria Veterans Day Flag Football Tournament, a flyover, music and fireworks. Eight teams, including a few from CU Denver, competed in the inaugural football tournament. The Campus Recreation Team took the cup, while the CU Denver Veteran Team finished fourth.
Because of inclement weather, some activities were moved indoors to the Tivoli Turnhalle. Jake Jabs, president and CEO of American Furniture Warehouse, and a Korean War veteran, attended the Auraria festivities.
Also held Saturday were a Veterans Day Parade in downtown Denver and a Colorado Remembrance Ceremony at Civic Center Park.
The fireworks display took place in front of the Tivoli Student Union.
