More than a year ago, the university’s Experiential Learning Center (ELC) and Student Life partnered to set up a Food Pantry to help hungry CU Denver students on the Denver Campus with Auraria.
The idea had evolved as staff and students who work in those offices noticed a need. Together, they came up with a plan to offer non-perishable items to current students – just for the asking.
When the Food Pantry first opened, donations came from a variety of sources and each month a handful of students stopped by to select a few items.
But already this year — since January, “the need has increased to 15 to 20 students stopping by each week,” said Rachel Wilcoxson, ELC Events and Assessment Coordinator. “The students stopping by to select items represent the same cross-section of students by age and gender as in our general student population.”
Because of the increased demand, the shelves are nearly empty. Items offered through the Food Pantry all are donated.
The best choices for donations include: pre-packaged items, boxed macaroni and cheese or other pasta meals, canned food such as tuna, beans and vegetables, as well as peanut butter and granola bars.
To help feed hungry students through the Food Pantry, donations can be dropped off Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Tivoli 260. Or call 303-556-6656.
