Media Relations team volunteers at shelter for Giving Back Campaign
Volunteers donned aprons and cracked eggs, chopped peppers, cooked bacon and baked rolls for women hungry for a hot meal on a cold, snowy morning on Dec. 1 at a Denver safe haven.
Members of the university’s Office of Media Relations spent the morning as breakfast chefs at The Gathering Place, Denver’s only daytime drop-in center for women and children who are homeless or are otherwise trying to re-establish their lives. Media specialist Jackie Brinkman organized the outing, as part of the university’s annual Giving Back Campaign.
Brinkman and colleagues Erika Matich, Steve Tapp, David Kelly, Dan Weaver, Danielle Zieg and Chris Casey prepared the meal and served eggs, bacon, rolls and fruit parfaits to about 75 women in The Gathering Place’s dining hall. They were joined by volunteers from the Colorado Women’s Forum in Health Administration, which is a regular contributor to the shelter and sponsor of the hot breakfast.
The Gathering Place provides classes, clothing and food shops, housing information, a computer lab, a children’s play area and other services to an average of 260 women and children every day.
