As another academic year begins on the CU Denver campus, the excitement of incoming students is almost palpable. Brimming with eagerness and admittedly a little nervous, new students are ushered into the CU Denver community during the annual convocation ceremony.
More than 600 students and their family members attended convocation on Aug. 18 at the Auraria PE/Events Center. The afternoon began with school and college receptions, allowing students to meet with faculty and fellow classmates. This year we welcomed the biggest and most diverse group of incoming students with 58 percent self-identifying as students of color. The ceremony, which for the first time also included transfer students, is just one example of CU Denver’s commitment to creating a united student body from day one.
“You are the hopes and dreams of your family,” said Kim Hunter Reed, PhD, executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, at this year’s convocation ceremony. “We are all here to root you on.”
CU Denver first-year students are ready to start the academic year with their best foot forward. “I’m nervous about making new friends, but I’m going to just introduce myself to as many new people as possible,” said Mignot Nigussie.
The student convocation event wrapped up with a barbecue on the CU Denver Athletic Field. New students lounged in the grass while making new friends and sharing their excitement for the academic year ahead.
