Full-time CU Denver online student Kamran Madani won the gold medal at the World University Karate Championship in Japan last month, and he hasn’t slowed down since. He’s competing around the world with the goal of qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Karate is a newly added event for the Tokyo games.
As a CU Online student, Madani has the scheduling convenience to pursue his educational goals while maintaining the rigorous training, travel and competition schedule of an Olympic hopeful. He is on schedule to graduate in May 2019 with a degree in psychology.
Corey Edwards, CU Denver online student success manager, has advised Madani throughout his college journey.
“Not everyone is going to be a world-class student athlete like Kamran is, but they have other things that are important to them like their families and their careers; they need flexibility,” Edwards told 9News for a story about Madani and the advantages of online learning.

Colorado Man Brings Home World Championship In Karate
CU Denver online student Kamran Madani, 21, brought home the gold from the World University Championships in Japan. He’ll compete in a new country every month for the next two years, working to improve his world ranking and land a spot on the Olympic team. He is doing it all while getting his degree online from the University of Colorado Denver. “I remember I was in my room in the middle of Dubai and I was writing an essay for one of my psychology classes,” Madani said.
