It’s been quite a summer for the CU Denver Dragon Boat Team.

In June, the Lynx paddlers were one of only two teams representing the United States (the other being from New York) at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival. In July, they were one of the top teams competing at the annual Sloan’s Lake Colorado Dragon Boat Festival.

Glory in Hong Kong

In Asia, the CU Denver team was one of only three teams from all of North America to compete. “In Hong Kong, we had the opportunity to learn from some of the best teams across the world about the sport and took a lot of tips and pointers from the experience,” said Nevan McCabe, team co-captain.

In Dragon Boat events, 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steer-person race in 40-foot canoes compete against other boats.

Interacting with teams from across the globe was a highlight for the CU Denver team in Hong Kong. The competitors played games, danced, cheered each other on and exchanged stories. The Lynx team placed in the semifinal rounds in two of the three divisions in which they competed.

“It was a super-exciting, awesome experience,” said co-captain Katherine Khuu, adding her thanks for CU Denver’s support as well as sponsor Dae Gee Korean Barbecue. The team has already received an invitation to return to the festival next year.

Big splash at Sloan’s

At the Sloan’s Lake event, the Lynx team took second place overall in the 500-meter races; first in their division in the 250M races; and set the fastest times for the 500M, 250M and 125M divisions overall.

“We were incredibly fortunate to have received coaching from Kerry Chow, a gentleman from the IDBF (International Dragon Boat Federation) which is the governing body for the sport,” McCabe said.

To close out the summer, CU Denver will compete at the GWN Dragon Boat Festival in Colorado Springs.
